In September, 2019, Instagram made a HUGE step towards protecting its users. For the first time ever, the tech platform will restrict posts related to dieting, detoxing, losing weight, and cosmetic surgery.
Under their new rules, posts which are trying to sell products related to weight loss will be hidden from all users under 18. And even better, posts with discount codes and claims of “miracle” results will be taken down forever.
‘We want Instagram to be a positive place for everyone that uses it’, says Emma Collins, Instagram’s public policy manager. ‘This policy is part of our ongoing work to reduce the pressure that people can sometimes feel as a result of social media”
Inspired by their conversations with experts such as Dr Ysabel Gerrard, Instagram aims to streamline the content posted on it’s platform in order to create a more positive swiping environment for it’s one billion plus users. They also worked with Jameela, who says they were supportive and helpful in response to her protests and petitions to protect young people against this harmful industry.
“Taking a stand to protect the physical and mental health of people online sends an important message out to the word,” she explained. “I’m thrilled to have been able to work towards this with them, alongside a host of other experts who shed light on the danger of these products.”
“As someone who struggled with an eating disorder for most of my youth, I’ve personally known and suffered the perils of the devious side of the diet/detox industry,” Jameela continued. “A focus of our advocacy since inception, it is a proud day for I Weigh and a day of hope for our generation, who deserve respect and protection from the celebrities and influencers that they follow”
