My Bag

Hello

My name is Jameela Jamil. Welcome To I Weigh Community.

Two years ago we started an Instagram account to try to create a safe and radically inclusive space on social media. A lot of us want to help others and change the world for the better, but don’t know where to start.

Activism can seem daunting. Sometimes it’s just hard and lonely. At I Weigh Community, we don’t believe it has to be that way. We believe in brick-by-brick activism, and making a difference in large numbers. We’re going to have to come together and do this as one to really shift the narrative of our society.

I Weigh Community will introduce you to new voices, artists, activists and movements. These are the people we believe we need to listen to. We are still learning, and we’re inviting you to come and learn alongside us so we can all grow together. It’s never too late to want to help and understand each other better.

This movement is so important to me, and I look forward to getting to know you all.

Love,
Jam x

Planned Parenthood and the Anniversary of Roe Vs Wade

WHAT’S AT STAKE: As we celebrate the upcoming 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we know that access to abortion is on the line like never before. From blatantly unconstitutional abortion bans, to filling our judicary with anti-abortion judges and threats of overturning Roe, our rights and freedoms are at stake. Already too many people across the country don’t have access to abortion. Let’s be clear — when politicians attack healthcare, the policies disproportionately affect people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, and young people. We must work to ensure access to health care — including access to abortion — does not depend on who you are, where you live, or how much money you make.

What Planned Parenthood is Working Towards: Momentum is on our side. States are taking bold steps to enshrine abortion rights. More Americans than ever before support abortion access. Illinois, New York, Vermont, and Rhode Island showed us what’s possible when we come together to protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care.

The fact is, the majority of Americans want more access to health care, not less. Nearly 8 in 10 Americans do not want to see Roe overturned. We must demand elected leaders listen.

Call to Action: In 2020, Planned Parenthood will work hand-in-hand with partners to push policies that protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care. Support Planned Parenthood, https://www.plannedparenthood.org/ , and stay up to date on their upcoming efforts:

  • In October, Planned Parenthood announced the launch of our largest-ever electoral program, their advocacy and political organizations will make a historic investment of at least $45 million in key battleground states to fund programs to help elect reproductive rights champions up and down the ballot in 2020.
  • In March, the Supreme Court will hear June Medical Services v. Gee. This is the first abortion rights case that the Supreme Court will hear since the confirmation of Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh to the court, and could render protections under Roe meaningless.
